- Abstract
Introduction: The determination and aim of education are to make all-round development of the human child. On the contrary to it, the real fact is that education alone is not capable of fulfilling all the aims of man in the modern age. The curriculum, teaching methodology, pattern of education, methods of discipline, teachers and teaching behaviour and methods of doing valuation, etc. also play a major role. There exists competition between the children as well as pressure from parents as well as from peers. In the present world, children do have different levels of anxiety before exams which may vary from student to student at an increased level, hindering their ability to perform their best. Therefore, it will be of help if a self-help guide can be prepared with a view to help them in overcoming exam anxiety and perform at their level best. Hence, the present study is to determine the exam anxiety level among students and to provide them with a self-help guide. Objective: To assess the exam anxiety level among students with a view to prepare a self-help guide. Methods: Setting and design: School-based descriptive study. All the students of classes eight and nine from rural and urban areas were included in this descriptive study. The schools were selected using convenience sampling. The assessment of the level of exam anxiety/test anxiety was accomplished with the help of the Westside Test Anxiety Scale which is a standardized tool. Results: Results of the present study revealed that the exam anxiety level among children was higher in urban areas. Upon analysis, a statistically significant association was noted between exam anxiety level and selected socio-demographic variables. Conclusion: The study concludes that exam anxiety is a common phenomenon and the results showed that a high level of test anxiety was found in children from urban areas. The socio-demographic variables namely the education of the mother, occupation of the father, class, and gender proved to have an association with the levels of exam anxiety.
