- Abstract
This study investigated the impact of teaching using a gamification approach-based mobile application for the acquisition of scientific concepts among fourth-grade students in Basic Education in the Sultanate of Oman during the COVID-19 pandemic. A quasi-experimental pre-post research design is used. The sample consists of 108 fourth-grade students, of which 55 students were assigned to the experimental group, and 53 students were assigned to the control group. A mobile application called "Dr. Science" was designed based on the principles of the gamification approach and was implemented for the experimental group. Additionally, the acquisition of the scientific concepts test was designed with a reliability coefficient of (0.77) and is implemented as a pre and post-test for both study groups. Results revealed a statistically-significant difference at (α=0.05) in the post-test between the two groups, favoring the experimental group. On the other hand, there is no statistically- significant difference attributed to gender. The study also concludes that there is no statistically significant interaction between the teaching method and gender in the post-test. The study recommends that science educators design mobile applications based on the principles of the gamification approach to support students' acquisition of scientific concepts, particularly during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
