- Abstract
Historical schools agreed on the importance of the document and its pivotal role in preserving historical heritage. However, they disagreed on the nature of the document. While Positivism was limited to using the written document, another school, such as The Annals, expanded its concept and considered that any written record, decree, or inscription is a document. Their disagreement was reflected in the subjects they chose to write about: Positivism focused on political and military history, while The Annals placed the emphasis on economic and social history. Among the Annals' historians is Fernand Braudel who is one of the principal defenders of the annals' view of the document. Conversely, the historian Sultan Al Qasimi is literally committed to using the written document in his historical writings. In this study, descriptive and analytical approaches were used to answer the following questions: What changed Braudel's view of the document? How was this reflected in his writings? Why did Al Qasimi adopt the written document? Can he be considered a Positivist historian given the methodological aspects of Positivism in his writings? What is the rationale for choosing to compare Braudel's and Al Qasimi's use of the document?.
