- Abstract
The present body protectors used by Indian paramilitary and police forces are manufactured using various types of polymers and foams and not fit to use for stabbing and impact due to various projectiles. In this paper three studies were carried out. In the first study, an interaction was established using designed questionnaire with 95 soldiers from Rapid Action Forces who used body protector during riots to understand the shortcoming of body protectors they faced during tackling the rioters. It was revealed from the survey that the soldiers need improved body protectors which can have better stab and impact resistance capability, better durability of hook and loop fasteners. Besides this, they complained about poor design and hygiene related issues related to body protector. In the second study, 25 body protectors were procured from the paramilitary forces, police forces and manufacturers to analyze various properties including stab and impact resistant. The study revealed that most of the body protectors failed to qualify the requirement given in VPAM KDIW 2004, Edition 2011, standard used for analyzing stab and impact resistance properties of body protector. In the third study, a composite material was developed which qualified the requirement of stab resistant as per VPAMKDIW 2004, Edition 2011 standard.
