- Abstract
Seaweed has wide applications in food industry, cosmetics, medicines, home furnishings and draperies. Anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombic, anti-microbial, wound healing properties of seaweed are well known. Seaweed fibre was converted into yarn by spinning and subsequently the yarn was woven into fabric and wet processed. Seaweed yarn was characterized by determining lea strength and yarn appearance. Good lea strength and excellent yarn appearance grade was obtained. Fabric was evaluated for tearing strength, tensile strength, crease recovery, abrasion resistance, pilling resistance, bursting strength, air permeability, stiffness, surface wetting, whiteness index, absorbency, colour fastness to washing, rubbing, perspiration and light. Physical and chemical properties of seaweed fabric are similar in nature with that of cotton fabric and can be used in apparel industry. Higher tensile strength of seaweed fabric in wet condition also corroborates its similarity with cotton. Moderate to good color fastness to rubbing, washing, perspiration and light was found in dyed and printed seaweed fabrics.
