- Abstract
1. The present investigation is based on field observations made by the author in southern Sweden, mostly Scania (Skâne), in the years 1942-1947. 2. A statement is given of the reactions of birds of prey to their prospective victims, and vice versa. The concept of hunts is discussed, and it is attempted to give a definition of what can really be considered a hunt. 3. Four species of predatory birds, viz., Sparrow-Hawk (`Accipiler nisus,), Merlin (Falco columbarius) Peregrine Falcon (Fcilco peregrinus,), and Sea- Eagle (Haliaeetus albicÜla,), are discussed as to their modes of hunting and choice of prey. 4. The observations were made mostly in the autumn and refer to migrating specimens. The representativeness, merits, and disadvantages of the observations are considered with regard to this point as well as to other sources of error. 5. A description is given of all successful hunts of the species in question, as observed by the author.
