- Abstract
This article reports allergy to cane reed in a clarinettist. A 10-year-old girl presented with a 4-month history or irritation on her lower lip. This had started some weeks after starting to play the clarinet. On examination, she had central scaling of the lower lip, which corresponded to the area of contact with the cane reed. Prick testing to fine scrapings of the Arundo donax cane reed was negative. Patch testing to the scrapings gave a red papular reaction at both 2 and 4 days. This was reproducible on repeating the patch test, providing that a used reed, rather than a brand new one, was used.
