- Title
HOUSING AMERICA'S ELDERLY: A STATE-LEVEL POLICY PERSPECTIVE.
- Authors
Schwartz, David C.
- Abstract
For at least the past fifteen years, state-level public policies to expand the availability and affordability of housing for the elderly have been largely derivative from federal housing policy. While the states have varied widely in their need for, commitment to and effectiveness in providing senior citizens 'housing,' the largest single relevant activity in almost every state has been the utilization of federal rent subsidies for income-eligible/asset-eligible senior citizens. The relatively sudden and near-total elimination of federal rent-subsidies has necessarily prompted a reappraisal of the role of the states in providing or guaranteeing the provision of adequate, safe, sanitary housing for America's elderly.
