- Abstract
In this article, it's discussed that the emergence of a new theoretical model in the history of the Ottoman makam theory from 15th century. This new model is called here as "Esoteric Model of Makam" (BMM). The concept of "makam" (a definitive melody-type) has a fundamental role in this model. According to this new conception, the area of tone and melody is classified into four classes, including "makam" (maqam, melody-type), "âvâze" (voice/sound), "şûbe" (branch), and "terkib" (compound). It's extremely remarkable that these concepts are associated with horoscopes, planets, four-elements and time, with regard to esoteric nature of model. In terms of conceptual meaning and functions, these concepts are analyzed here for the first time with hermeneutical approach. In light of findings, it's determined that these concepts are composed of representation of the Pythagorean conception of "the harmony/music of the spheres", in point of esoteric symbolism.
