The article discusses a study on Atlantic history to be able to understand the historical depths of inter-imperial Atlantic linkages. Topics covered include approaches to the concept of diaspora to be able to see past the tragedy of violent enslavement and the place of European empires, the ways in which African peoples forged the connections that helped to make the Atlantic world, and the methodological reasons that historians of Africa turned away from the precolonial era.
