- Abstract
The article presents a study of the health research output of countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, based on journal publications from 1995 to 2004 by Sub-Saharan African authors indexed in MEDLINE, the bibliographic database of the U.S. National Library of Medicine. The greatest number of authors were found to be from South Africa, followed by those from Nigeria and Kenya. Other topics discussed include: medical publication output trends; topics of study, such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, cancer, etc.; and publication in international versus national journals.
