- Title
REVIEW AND REVISION OF BEHAVIORAL GUIDELINES USED BY RELIGIOUS CODEPENDENT ENABLERS.
- Authors
Mitchell, Christina E.
- Abstract
Codependent adult children of dysfunctional families of origin often assiduously seek not only the approval of their partner but self-approval and exoneration as well. Though they may be thoroughly immersed in self-help books and support groups, they frequently reach out to the therapist for additional assistance. Codependents are known to have an external locus of control—to react to their partner's dogmas and demands. They often attend to the "shoulds" and "oughts" which are at least partially based on a vague and unstudied interpretation of one of their sources of authority—the Bible. The therapist can offer help in reviewing this source for more balanced and internally controlled behavioral choices and justification.
