- Title
Book Review: Black Women's Health: Paths to Wellness for Mothers and Daughters by Michele Tracy Berger.
- Authors
Flynn, Karen
- Abstract
Equally important, Berger points out how mothers have internalized gendered messages that they are primarily responsible for "all caretaking related to health and the consumption of healthy foods" (p. 105). Based on focus groups conducted with southern African American mothers and their daughters' of ages 12 to 18 years, Berger centers their respective "worldview" regarding health themes. The mothers Berger interviewed also recognized the necessity of taking control of their health broadly conceived, yet as Berger illustrates, "their health is often compromised" (p. 67).
