Staging the Market Mechanisms of Medieval Mating in Den utro hustru.
- Authors
Larsen, Mads
- Abstract
The article analyzes the Scandinavian school play "Den utro hustru (The Unfaithful Wife)" presumably written around 1500 by a university-educated teacher dramatizing humanistic, pre-Lutheran views on sex and marriage. Topics include the significance of the European Marriage Pattern (EMP) for European communities, comments on the play's structure and motifs as well as its dramaturgy and values, and the staging of courtship driven by market mechanisms in the play using physical humor.
