- Abstract
The article presents information about a study that made a discovery of a new pyrimidine dimer in bacteriophage T4 DNA. When cells or virus particles are exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light, chemical modifications occur within their DNA, which, if not removed or repaired, can result in lethality, mutagenicity, or in higher organisms, carcinogenicity. One of the most widely studied types of UV-induced damage to DNA is the formation of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers between adjacent pyrimidines in the same DNA strand; the 5-6 double bond of each of the adjacent pyrimidines opens, and together they form a cyclobutyl linkage between the two pyrimidines.
