CONVERSING IN VERSE.
- Authors
HELSINGER, ELIZABETH
- Abstract
The article explores ballad talk as a form of verse conversation in poetry. It considers Christina Rossetti's devotional poems in the late 1850s and early 1860s from the perspective of her ballad pastiches, including "Noble Sisters" and "Despised and Rejected," which allows readers to involve in stichomythic exchange or intimacy with each other and with God. It examines Thomas Hardy's elegies and his techniques of ballad to recreate affective experience of the voices conversing in the poems.
