- Abstract
Colombia has experienced a low intensity and long lasting internal conflict. Ongoing peace talks between the Government and the main guerrilla groups suggest this violent conflict may soon come to an end. Post-conflict, peace-building and recovery efforts will entail dealing with reconciliation and forgiveness issues. Hence, studies leading to an understanding of the relationship between the predisposition to forgive and other factors are important to develop policies that can help in the upcoming reconciliation process. In this chapter, we explore the relationship between the different levels of socio-moral perspectives of individuals who experience harm as a result of war actions, and their propensity to forgive. In particular, we study the relationship between the propensity to forgive and Kohlberg's stages of moral development. Additionally, we examine the relationship between the propensity to forgive and people's preference for either retributive or restorative justice. This chapter also studies how - within the context of war - the propensity to forgive severe offenses is affected by several circumstances associated with the offense, such as the degree of severity of the consequences, the offender's intention to cause harm and the presence or absence of transgressors' actions to repair the consequences of their actions. The relationship between the propensity to forgive and several demographic variables is also analysed. In contrast with other studies, this chapter explores new relationships between the propensity to forgive and moral reasoning involving situations closely related to civil war. In the final part of this chapter we begin an exploration of the relationship between the propensity to forgive and evolutionary psychology. A sample of 187 individuals participated in the study. Interviews and questionnaires were used to collect the required data.
