The article focuses on matriarchal theory in the late-19th century in Great Britain. One of interesting aspects of the 19th-century anthropological debate about matriarchy is the way that it prefigures 20th century feminist debate. According to Sir John Lubbock, marriage begins in the lowest races as communal marriage or promiscuity then becomes a temporary alliance that exists only till birth of the child.
