- Abstract
A literary criticism of the 1747 comedy play "The Suspicious Husband," by Benjamin Hoadly, first starring actor David Garrick in the role of Ranger, is presented. It presents an synopsis of contemporary criticisms of the play written by critics including David Erskine Baker, William Shirley, Samuel Foote. An overview of the story's plot is given. Themes explored include social class and 18th-century theater, virtue and vice, and sentimentalism.
