- Abstract
The article presents a look at the author's thoughts regarding comprehensive cardiovascular examinations performed on great apes at a local zoo. During the seventh session, on an adult orangutan named Penari, the animal had to be anesthetized and transported to a hospital, where she went into distress with pulmonary edema and respiratory acidosis due to a blocked airway, becoming hypotensive soon afterward. The orangutan was put on a ventilator but soon after suggested acute respiratory distress syndrome and died. The author comments on how patients should be perceived by their physicians, arguing that assuming patients are innocent allows them to receive the best care possible.
