- Authors
Haroon-ur-Rashid; Akhtar, Raja Nasim
- Abstract
Gemination is frequently found in many languages of the world. Hindko, an Indo-Aryan language, also makes use of geminates. This paper aims to investigate Hindko geminate consonants and their acoustic properties. In addition it also attempts to explore the effect of gemination on syllabification patterns. This study of acoustic correlates in Hindko reveals that singleton and geminate consonants differ significantly from each other on the basis of temporal properties. From syllabification perspective, geminate consonants have several important implications like they provide prime motivation for the application of Maximum Onset Principle (MOP), cause ambisyllabification and contribute to syllable weight in Hindko.
