- Abstract
Assessment practices have been reported to have effect on teaching and learning. However, formative assessment, unlike standardised tests-IBL.TS, university entrance tests, school leaving examinations and so on, has not received enough attention of washback researchers. Normative assessment is included in the assessment regime of a curriculum to help learners diagnose and improve their learning weaknesses. This study is an attempt to investigate learners' preferences regarding formative assessment tasks and their association with the learning strategies and learning materials used by them. A. student-survey questionnaire was distributed among 360 English-major Saudi students and 238 responses were received. The findings indicate the students prefer multiple choice questions over essay-type questions for different reasons. In addition, the scope of their learning materials is very narrow. However, the study found that the learners do consider formative assessment as an effective learning tool which helps them know their mistakes and improve their reading and writing skills.
