- Abstract
Mass media, one of the basic creative dynamics which shape cultural exchanges, take an effevtive role on the creation and dissemination of these new cultural context. In this study, it was pragmatically examined, curses in the “Leyla and Mecnun” TV series, aired as 103 episodes, from 2011 to 2013, and watched by very large audience at that period. One of the basic genre in varieties of the society and civilization, people’s daily lives, rituals and especially oral culture, like blessings, curses used in the fiction of the series and their contribution to the show are discussed. In this direction, first of all, universal and pragmatic pattern and universal structure of curses and cursing, the views of them in Turkish culture were mentioned generally. Later on the study, after informing about the fiction and the characters of the series, it was analysed how curses used as a means of creating surreal humor in this serial and its fiction, who cursed to whom, when and where, and for what purpose. Thus, the cultural and pragmatic aspect of the curses, which change according to various age and context, analysed in the sample of the usage in the serial. That how the traditional genre of cursing can be used pragmatically in the fiction of the popular serial, within the context of the traditional and popular culture, was elucidated.
