- Abstract
The article presents information on London County Council (LCC), the largest provider of hospital beds in Britain. It also examines contemporary perceptions of the LCC hospital service during 1929-1939. In 1937, Somerville Hastings, the Chairman of the LCC Hospital and Medical Services Committee, reviewed the development of the capital's municipal hospitals. The LCC experience provided a model for health service reorganization. It also discusses the Local Government Act that was introduced by the reforming Conservative Minister of Health, Neville Chamberlain in 1929.
