- Abstract
The article reviews land acquisitions by the U.S. government under the New Deal in order to build the Fort Peck Dam and Reservoir project in Montana in the 1930s. It looks into the differences in mean acquisition prices of private lands acquired through condemnation or eminent domain, voluntary agreement or dispossession. It discusses the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' (USACE) acquisition process, as well as the impact of dispossession on ranchers and homesteaders including farmer relocation.
