- Authors
Goldman, Jason
- Abstract
The article focuses on the erotic photography of Wilhelm von Gloeden, or Baron von Gloeden, a nineteenth-century photographer who is described as a libertine artist by French novelist Roger Peyrefitte. Von Gloeden's scenes invoke the ancient Greek life and in his writings von Gloeden comments on intimacy with his models. The melodrama in "Expectation" and "Il fauno gigante" is mentioned, as well as von Gloeden's production of public and "under-the-counter" photographs and special clientele. Photographs included in this article are untitled frontal nudes from the early 20th century and "Sicilian Boys."
