- Abstract
Introduction. Knowing the normal aspects and variation of root number of the particular morphology of every tooth is essential for clinical success treatment. Particular aspects of root morphology in first maxillary premolars have been met in clinical studies that we developed. The purpose of the study is to signal the growing incidence of root abnormalities, especially in first maxillary premolars and the clinical consequence of the presented aspects. Material and method. For the evaluation of the incidence of morphologic variation in first maxillary premolars we developed clinical and radiographic studies for a period of five years in a homogenous lot of 1,000 patients from which 500 were women and 500 men, aged between 10 and 50 years old. The results reveal five cases of first premolars with supernumerary roots. Conclusions of the study confirm the presence of the variations in root number in first upper premolars in everyday clinical life in our country, even though the literature does not emphasize frequently such particular aspects. The morphology of first maxillary premolars with three roots and three distinct root canals is known in the specific literature as „radiculous tooth", because of the similitude with the first upper molar.
