- Abstract
"Service Denied: Marginalized Veterans in Modern American History" edited by John M. Kinder and Jason A. Higgins explores the experiences of marginalized veterans in the United States. The book challenges the notion of a universal and revered veteran experience, highlighting how factors such as race, gender, disability, economics, and politics shape public recognition and state treatment of veterans. The book is divided into four sections, covering different time periods and themes, and includes topics such as the exclusion of certain veterans from benefits, the experiences of Black and Chicano/a veterans, the history of LGBT+ veterans, and the intersection of gender and the Vietnam War. The book concludes with a discussion of the experiences of marginalized veterans in contemporary "forever wars" and the issue of imprisoned veterans. While the book provides valuable insights into the experiences of marginalized veterans, it does not address the issue of unhoused veterans, which remains an important and underexplored topic. Overall, "Service Denied" is a significant contribution to the literature on the veteran experience, shedding light on the diverse perspectives and challenges faced by marginalized veterans in American history.
