- Abstract
Judges 2:1-5 consists of an introduction (v. 1a), the angel of Yahweh's message (vv. 1b-3), and Israel's response (vv. 4-5). The angel's prophetic message includes historical prologue (vv. 1b-2a), accusation of unfaithfulness (v. 2b,) and announcement of punishment based on covenant curses (v. 3). The parallelism in the speech indicates that it is poetry. It begins with a couplet (v. 1b) and continues with eight lines in an ABCDD'A'B'C' structure: a couplet that contains the accusation (v. 2b) framed by two triplets (vv. 1c-2a, 3) with certain correspondences between them. The confrontation seeks Israel's repentance, a goal which appears to be realized in vv. 4-5.
