- Authors
Kok, Anne; Roessingh, Carel
- Abstract
The article discusses the concepts of social integration, differentiation, and fragmentation in the Old Colony Mennonite community known as the Shipyard Colony in northern Belize from 1958 to 2008. It examines the evolution of three generations of Old Order Mennonites in the Shipyard Colony, particularly the impact that modernity had on the fragmentation of the community. The article also discusses the establishment of the Shipyard Colony and the need for land that necessitated a move from Mexico to Belize, conflicting opinions concerning education, technology, and Biblical interpretation among Old Colony Mennonites in Belize, and the social differences that characterized the three generations of Old Colony Mennonites in the colony.
