- Abstract
Lumen Domus, the history in the form of annals of the Dominican Convent of St. Catherine, in Barcelona (three volumes: 1219-1634; 1635-1700; 1701-1802), not only notes the activities of the Dominicans, but has also a good number of references to the Jesuits in Barcelona and to the Society of Jesus. The well known Disputa de auxiliis brought about a change in the way the Jesuits were looked upon in the annals. Before 1603 there is hardly any notice of the Society of Jesus. But after that date, whenever the Jesuits are noted, they appear with a negative or critical overtone: they are referred to as "our foes". The language used in the entries from 1603 to 1774 is harsh and even offensive. It is interesting to underline that the Jesuit Crónica del colegio de Belén (the Chronicle of the College of Bethlehem, 1545-1700), when the Jesuits refer to the Dominicans, although they talk about "our rivals" (and they are not the only competitors of the Jesuits at the time), they never pass judgment on the Dominicans. As the Crónica only stretches until 1700, it is not possible to offer a study of the mutual treatment in the 18th century.
