- Abstract
The article presents a discussion of the potlatch, which is the festival ceremony of indigenous peoples from the Pacific Northwest Coast of North America. The author examines the ways in which the potlatch is the central cultural institution of the North American Northwest area and part of the ethnic identity of its indigenous peoples. It is noted that potlatches feature rites and ceremonies of passage which are passed on to new generations of aristocratic families. Particular attention is paid to the potlatch experiences of the indigenous group known as the Nuu-chah-nulth or Nootka Indians.
