- Abstract
Sales and financial scope for SMEs in Europe shrank after the 2008 international crisis. Foreign trade is their favoured form of internationalisation, so that the 2009 trade collapse caused them major losses. Over a decade later, the business environment has become much more reliable. The latest analyses of internationalisation date from the years right after the crisis. So it is worth seeing what factors help and restrict export activity by Hungarian SMEs and how these have changed. After an overview of existing literature, the authors report on a questionnaire survey of the views of almost 150 company leaders on external and internal factors affecting exports and the effects of export activity on their firm. The sample was divided according to export intensity and to the firm's supplier status, the latter, to our knowledge, not having been researched before. The findings partly confirm and partly differ from previous domestic and Visegrád 4 studies. Management attitude is found to be decisive to successful exports; financing problems have eased compared to previous years; significant exports have a positive effect on Hungarian SMEs.
