- Abstract
The article discusses the costs associated with the incarceration of prisoners in U.S. correctional facilities as of November 2012, focusing on an analysis of the economic burden placed on American taxpayers as a result of increases in prison expenditures and budgets. The costs of funding correctional facility employee health benefit programs and pension plans are addressed, along with an examination of the capital costs needed to construct and renovate prisons in 26 U.S. states.
