- Abstract
This article examines the nature of the gentleman farmer as portrayed in the novel "Emma," by Jane Austen. Her character of George Knightley represents Austen's ideal of the gentleman farmer. She felt this ideal, although romantic and conservative, was important for a moral society. The author describes other types of agrarian writing of the era.
