- Title
Verdi's Last Laugh: Parody as Late Style in "Falstaff."
- Authors
Hutcheon, Linda; Hutcheon, Michael
- Abstract
A literary criticism is presented which evaluates some of the prominent works of Italian operatic composer Giuseppe Verdi. The play "Falstaff" is the octogenarian Verdi's answer to the changes he lamented in the Italian operatic scene and demonstrates what he thought he had to offer for its renewal. As such, this last work brings together the late style discourses of both continuity and rupture in a new and provocative way. The historical irony for Verdi is that those who continued to learn from German composer Wilhelm Richard Wagner included that younger generation of Italian composers he was trying to teach.
