- Abstract
The article discusses the effect of the leadership of Queen Elizabeth I on English arts and literature, with particular focus given to a portrait of the Queen by Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger and the poem "Elegie: Going to Bed" by the poet John Donne. The contrast between the portrait's idealization of the queen and the poem's satirization of the excesses of her court is also explored.
