- Title
Preparing for and Facing a Challenge in a School Library.
- Abstract
The article focuses on preparation and handling of the challenges in a school library, which is generally referred as censorship. It discusses the definitions for the terminology concerning the problems on resources in libraries, developed by the American Library Association's (ALA) Intellectual Freedom Committee, which include expression of concerns, oral complaint, and written complaint. It mentions several issues causing the challenges in library and classroom resources including offensive language, sexual explicitness, and violence. It offers steps on how to combat censorship and prepares for a challenge by creating a board-approved materials selection policy, providing an explanation of reconsideration process, and building positive relationship within the school community.
