- Title
The Chess Game and Prospero’s Epilogue in The Tempest.
- Authors
Jones-Davies, Margaret
- Abstract
A literary analysis is presented of the Early Modern English play "The Tempest," by William Shakespeare, focusing on the thematic significance of the chess game referenced in Act V, scene i. The author asserts that lines 172-179 in that scene make up a calligram of a chess board. Further topics addressed include late Medieval commentary on chess by Evrard de Conty, the character Prospero's rhetorical valediction, and allegorical interpretation of the entire play through the metaphor of chess.
