- Title
ST ERKENWALD AND THE JUDICIAL OATH.
- Authors
Turville-Petre, Thorlac
- Abstract
A literary criticism of the word "declynet" in the poem "St. Erkenwald" is presented. It discusses the use of the word in Latin translations of the Old Testament, "Troy," and "De Miseria Conditionis Humane." It describes the legal uses of the word in ecclesiastical and Anglo-Norman oaths. It speculates that the author of "St. Erkenwald" had legal training or was influenced by legal practitioners. The "Burton Annals of 1257," the poet Bede, and the "Close Roll for 1277-8" are also discussed.
