- Title
LORD FOPPINGTON AND LE BOURGEOIS GENTILHOMME.
- Authors
Patterson, Frank M.
- Abstract
The article focuses on Lord Foppington, one of Sir John Vanbrugh's best known contributions to English comedy, the peerless fop of The Relapse. Many models for this figure can be found in earlier drama, and one of them, Foppington in Aphra Behn's The City Heiress, even bears the same name. This duplication may be mere coincidence, of course, since it is a humors name, and the most familiar antecedent for Vanbrugh's character was undoubtedly Etherege's Sir Fopling Flutter. Vanbrugh must also have had in mind Monsieur Jourdain from Molière's Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme.
