- Abstract
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the food sector is a relevant research topic because the food industry's heavy reliance on natural resources has significant social and environmental impacts that accelerate the urgency for food producers to start CSR initiatives (Hartmann, 2011). Today, the food production and consumption system is not considered sustainable due to the industrialization and globalization of agriculture and food processing, as well as increased consumer consumption of more animal protein (Reisch, et al., 2013). In recent years, there has been a search for new development strategies that combine competitiveness, sustainability, and ethics (Lazarides and Goula, 2018) as a result of consumers' increasing sensitivity to health, food safety, and the environment; the focus on health and food quality is leading both practitioners and researchers to examine sustainability issues in the food sector. The objective of the paper is to improve the level of knowledge through a literature review to perform a network analysis to map the conceptual scope and structure in order to scientifically identify relevant research articles and clusters in the field of study. This will identify future research and help both practitioners and academics. The study is based on three main research questions:. 1) What is the historical evolution of the literature on CSR in the food industry? 2) What are the main contributions that have had the greatest impact on CSR in the food industry? Who are the main authors writing on this research topic? Which countries publish the largest number of articles, and which are the main journals around which the research topic is organized? 3) What are the main areas of future research on CSR in the food industry? In this paper, a systematic literature network analysis (SLNA) is applied to analyze the evolving field of research on the topic of CSR in the food industry. This technique is based on a two-step methodology developed by Colicchia and Strozzi (2012), which combines a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and a Bibliographic Network Analysis (BNA). This methodology integrates traditional content-based literature reviews with quantitative information extraction from bibliographic networks to identify emerging themes and reveal the dynamic evolution of scholarly production in a discipline (Strozzi et al., 2017). This technique provides a literature review through an objective methodology, thus reducing subjectivity in the execution of research analysis. The results show the current state of the art on the topic and suggest new research trends. Among the contributions of the study is the application of an innovative methodology called SLNA to perform the analysis, confirming its goodness as a method for dynamic analysis.
