- Abstract
The objective of this study was to establish the association between diabetes mellitus and degeneration of the lumbar spinal discs. This is a cross-sectional study. This retrospective case-control study was conducted between 2022 and 2023, involving a total of 281 patients diagnosed with diabetes and 439 patients identified with Non diabetes. The diagnoses were based on clinical and radiographic evidence. Checklists were utilized to gather demographic data and medical histories of the patients. The lumbar spine study examined the antero-posterior and transverse dimensions in diabetes and non-diabetic individuals, revealing a notable disparity in L3 and L5. Our analysis found that disc degeneration with widespread disc changes is often seen at the L3 and L5 levels, while it is least prevalent at the L1 - L2 and L4 level. In conclusion, an association exists between diabetes and lumbar spinal stenosis. Diabetes mellitus can heighten the probability of acquiring lumbar spinal stenosis.
