- Title
In the Contact Zone: Code-switching Strategies by Latino/a Writers.
- Authors
Torres, Lourdes
- Abstract
The author focuses on the use of Spanish language in Latino/a texts written in the U.S. in the 1990s. The author claims that through the use of Spanish in prose writing, a technique called code-switching, Latino/a writers can define their relationship to homelands, language, and transnational identities. The author discusses different strategies used by Latino/a writers to incorporate Spanish into English language writing, and highlights comments by Latino/a writers discussing why they chose to use or not use Spanish in their work. The author also discusses issues such as the translation of foreign words, monolingual and bilingual readers, and examines selected works of literature by Latino/a writers.
