- Abstract
Although time typically appears as an objective reality and as a given boundary condition of (democratic) politics, its relevance cannot be captured in a theoretically sufficient depth with an objectivist understanding of clock-time. This paper rather assumes that time and democracy constitute each other (in modernity) in mutual dependence and in a specific way. On the basis of a contingency theoretical approach and an operative understanding of time which locates the emergence of time in meaning-making events, it is argued that democracy features a specific temporal relation to the world in which the openness of the future is both increased and reduced, while the contingent character of this relationship is preserved. On the basis of Arendt and Rancière, this premise is then specified in terms of democratic theory, resulting in two variants of how the contingent interplay between temporal opening and closure could be sustained over time. This temporalization of democratic theory enables a perspective on the temporal reality of democratic practices which goes beyond an analysis of the duration of democratic procedures.
