- Abstract
In addition to providing information, picture books have a great influence on language learning and the development of cognitive skills. They thus make an important contribution to children's culturalization process, and as a conduit of social discourses they transport ideas of gender and men's and women's (a)typical behaviour. Using data from 6,117 characters in 133 picture books which are currently being read in child day care facilities, the article examines the following questions: What is the binary gender distribution in picture books? Are gender stereotypes reproduced or are they softened? Do picture books add to the heteronormative dualism of men and women?
