- Abstract
The study examines the role of school supervision in coping with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on schools and education in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The school supervisions in the three countries have different tasks, including regulation control, personnel management, quality evaluation, and support for individual learning processes. The study identifies three phases of the pandemic in which school supervision faced different challenges. Communication plays a central role, both in writing and in person, to support schools as best as possible. Pedagogical work is partially neglected in favor of crisis management. In Austria, school supervision had to invest a lot of energy in control tasks during the second wave of the pandemic. In Switzerland, the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Directors of Education (EDK) plays a mediating role between the federal government and the cantons. It is important to further analyze the experiences during the pandemic and derive insights for the further development of the role of school supervision.
