- Abstract
Objective To analyze the present situation and development trend of osteoporosis, in order to provide information for further research. Methods Using ‘osteoporosis’ as the key word to search literatures in GoPubMed (1946-2014), the distribution of literatures by year, area, publication journals, and main authors was analyzed. Results The total number of articles published globally about osteoporosis was 53838. The literature number increased year by year from 1984 to 2014, reaching 3120 in 2014. The leading country in osteoporosis research was the United States (12,057, 22.39%), followed by Japan (3,292, 6.11%), and China ranked the sixth (2,005, 3.72%). The density of literature publication was high in Eastern United States, European countries, and Japan. Of the 20 top literatures output cities, six of them were in the United States, and three of them were in China, including Beijing (307 papers), Shanghai (274 papers), and Hong Kong (265 papers). The publication in these 3 cities accounted for 42.19% of the total publication in China. Most of the 20 top journals about osteoporosis research were from the United States and European countries. There were only two from Japan in Asia. Of the 20 top authors of osteoporosis research literatures output, there was no Chinese author. Conclusion GoPubMed is a valid tool to analyze the current situation and development trend of osteoporosis research. The literature number has been increasing year by year progressively, indicating that the research about osteoporosis is still a hotspot. However, most of the research is concentrated in the United States, European countries, and Japan. The research from China and other developing countries is weak.
