- Abstract
The co-authors capitalized on interactions with high school students during a scholar-in-residence experience in India. This research focuses on the critical responses of high school students (N=200) to the custom of “childmarriage” subsumed in the classical short story, Ranga’s Marriage. Students were asked to express their positions and perspectives on the custom of wedlock between minors. Data analysis revealed a unanimous lack of support for the practice. The co-authors advanced and defined the practice of critical reader response in the language classroom to develop a critical (i.e., socially conscious) perspective.
