- Abstract
This article presents a study which investigated hantaviruses in bats from Sierra Leone. Hantaviruses cause life-threatening human diseases such as hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome and hemorrhagic fever. These viruses are transmitted from rodent reservoirs to humans. For the study, researchers examined 525 tissue samples from 417 bats representing 28 genera for the presence of hantavirus RNA. One sample yielded a positive result and it was identified belonging to a Nycteris hispida species. The researchers concluded that further research is necessary to verify Nycteris hispida as a natural reservoir host.
